VectorLinux 7.0 Standard Edition
The team leader Robert Lange announced the release of Vector Linux 7.0 Standard Edition, the main version of our favorite distro. This document shares some highlights and details.
Features and Applications
Vector 7 ships the Xfce desktop, a lightweight environment that aims to be fast and low on system resources, while still being visually appealing and user friendly. The Xfce team made a big effort for keeping the desktop up to date with modern technologies. Several improvements have been made, like network and shares browsing in Thunar supporting many protocols like SFTP, SMB, FTP and more. The panel application has been rewritten, dialogs has been improved including the Display Settings with RandR support and the Keyboard Settings dialog.
The VL team included as many drivers as possible, supporting a wide range of wireless devices, video cards, webcams, and other devices right after installation.
As usual, DVD playback is supported out of the box and all the codecs are already included. Xine, MPlayer and other multimedia applications are part of the menu.
Productivity is assured by Abiword, in it's 2.8.6 version, and Gnumeric 1.10.12. Epdfview is available as PDF viewer.
Internet and Networking
Following a well known tradition, Firefox and Opera are included with Flash support. Pidgin is the messenger client of choice.
The Graphics menu includes the excellent Gimp 2.6.11 for image editing, Inkscape for vector drawing and Shotwell for photo management.
Package Manager and System administration
Slapt-get and Gslapt makes the installation of extra software easy and painless. You will benefit from the Vector Linux Extra repository to suit all your needs and enhance your computing experience. Gslapt puts Office tools, Games, Networking applications, Command Line tools and more one click away from your computer. For this release, we built the biggest repository since Vector is around.
Vasm and VasmCC will make the administration of your system very straight-forward. You can configure your network, mount additional media at boot time, share files with your network and more.
