How To Do Zoom Breakout Groups

Hello there! Today, I would like to discuss my own personal experience and knowledge on utilizing breakout groups during Zoom meetings. With the shift to remote work and online learning, Zoom has become an essential platform for connecting people virtually. One of its most beneficial features is the option to form breakout groups.

What are Zoom Breakout Groups?

If you’re not familiar with breakout groups, they allow you to divide a larger Zoom meeting into smaller, more manageable discussion or work groups. This can be incredibly useful for facilitating collaboration, brainstorming sessions, team-building activities, or simply fostering more intimate conversations.

Here’s how you can create and manage breakout groups in Zoom:

Step 1: Enable Breakout Rooms

Before you can use breakout groups, make sure you’ve enabled the feature in your Zoom settings. To do this, log in to your Zoom account, go to the Zoom web portal, and navigate to the “Account Settings” page. From there, find the “Breakout Room” option and make sure it’s toggled on.

Step 2: Schedule the Meeting

Once you’ve enabled breakout rooms, schedule your Zoom meeting as you normally would. Specify the date, time, and participants for the meeting. Make sure to communicate the purpose and goals of the breakout groups to your attendees beforehand.

Step 3: Assign Participants to Breakout Groups

When you start the Zoom meeting, you’ll see the option to create breakout rooms. Click on the “Breakout Rooms” button, and a window will appear where you can manage the breakout groups.

You have two options here:

  1. Automatically: If you want Zoom to randomly assign participants to breakout groups, click on the “Automatically” tab and specify the number of groups you want to create. Zoom will then automatically divide your participants evenly among the groups.
  2. Manually: If you prefer to manually assign participants to specific breakout groups, click on the “Manually” tab. You can then start assigning participants to each group by clicking on the “+” button next to each group’s name.

Step 4: Manage Breakout Groups

Once the breakout groups are created, you can join any group as a host or move between groups to facilitate discussions and provide assistance. As a host, you have full control over the breakout rooms. You can broadcast announcements to all groups, send messages to specific groups, and even join any breakout room to offer guidance or answer questions.

While the participants are in their breakout groups, you can also set a timer to automatically bring everyone back to the main meeting. This is a useful feature to ensure that each group has enough time for their discussions without going over the allocated time.

Step 5: Bring Everyone Back to the Main Meeting

When the time is up or when you want to end the breakout sessions, you can easily bring everyone back to the main meeting. As the host, you’ll have a notification that allows you to “Close All Rooms.” By selecting this option, all breakout groups will be closed, and participants will be brought back to the main meeting room automatically.

Conclusion

Breakout groups in Zoom provide an excellent way to engage participants in meaningful discussions and collaboration during virtual meetings. Whether you’re hosting a team meeting, an online class, or a virtual workshop, breakout rooms offer flexibility and the opportunity for more focused conversations.

By following the steps outlined above, you can easily implement breakout groups in your Zoom meetings and create an interactive and engaging environment for all participants. So, go ahead and give it a try!
