Notion is an excellent resource for arranging and overseeing tasks, projects, and files. A standout feature of Notion is the capability to link documents directly to your pages. In this piece, I will lead you through the steps for attaching a document to Notion and provide some of my own helpful tips and perspectives throughout.

Step 1: Create a Page in Notion

To begin, open Notion and navigate to the page where you want to attach a document. This could be a project page, a meeting note, or any other type of page you have set up in Notion. If you don’t have a page yet, go ahead and create one by clicking on the “+” button in the sidebar and selecting “Page.”

Step 2: Insert a File Block

Once you’re on the desired page, click on the “+” button to open the block menu. From the options available, select “File.”

Step 3: Choose a Document to Attach

A file picker window will appear, allowing you to choose the document you want to attach. You can either select a file from your computer or choose from recently uploaded files. Notion supports a wide range of file formats, including documents, spreadsheets, presentations, images, and more.

Now, this is where personal touches come into play. I like to organize my documents using relevant tags or categories. For example, if I’m attaching a design document, I might add the tag “Design” to make it easier to find later. Notion allows you to add tags to attached documents, providing a flexible way to organize your files.

Step 4: Add Description and Metadata

Once you’ve selected the document to attach, Notion will display it as a file block on your page. You can customize the appearance of the file block by adding a title, description, and metadata such as size, date created, or any other relevant information.

I find it helpful to use concise and descriptive titles for my attached documents. This makes it easier to identify them at a glance. Additionally, adding a description can provide more context or notes about the document, further enhancing its usefulness.

Step 5: Collaborate and Access Attachments

Notion is known for its robust collaboration features. When you attach a document to a page, you can share it with others, allowing them to view, edit, and comment on the document directly within Notion.

With your document attached and shared, you can easily access it whenever you need it. Simply click on the file block, and Notion will open the document in a preview mode. If you want to edit the document, click on the “Edit” button, and Notion will open it in the corresponding application on your computer.
