How To Move Trello Boards

Today, I would like to share my own personal journey and detailed instructions for relocating Trello boards. As a dedicated user of Trello for managing my tasks and projects, I have often found myself in situations where I need to move boards. Whether it is for restructuring my workflow, collaborating with a new team, or simplifying my Trello arrangement, moving boards can greatly enhance organization and productivity. Let us now explore the process of moving Trello boards!

Step 1: Exporting the Board

First things first, before moving a Trello board, it’s essential to create a backup by exporting it. This will ensure that you don’t lose any data or progress during the process. To export the board, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Trello board you want to move
  2. Click on the “Show Menu” button in the top right corner of the board
  3. From the menu, select “More” and then “Print and Export”
  4. Choose the “Export as JSON” option
  5. Save the exported file to a safe location on your computer or cloud storage

Step 2: Creating a New Board

Once you have exported the board, it’s time to create a new board in the desired location. Follow these steps to create a new board:

  1. Go to the Trello homepage and log in to your account
  2. Click on the plus (+) button in the top left corner to create a new board
  3. Give the new board a name and choose any other settings or preferences
  4. Click “Create” to create the new board

Step 3: Importing the Exported Board

Now that you have the new board ready, it’s time to import the exported board into it. Follow these steps to import the exported board:

  1. Open the new board you just created
  2. Click on the “Show Menu” button in the top right corner of the board
  3. From the menu, select “More” and then “Print and Export”
  4. Choose the “Import JSON” option
  5. Select the exported JSON file from your computer or cloud storage
  6. Click “Import” to import the board

Once the import process is complete, your old board will be replicated in the new board, including all cards, lists, labels, and attachments. Take a moment to review the new board and ensure that everything has been successfully transferred.

Step 4: Cleaning Up

Now that you have successfully moved your Trello board, it’s a good idea to clean up any remnants of the old board. Here are a few things you can do:

  • Delete the old board: If you no longer need the old board, you can delete it by opening it and clicking on the “Show Menu” button, then selecting “More” and finally “Close Board”. Confirm the deletion when prompted.
  • Remove members: If you had team members or collaborators on the old board who are no longer needed, you can remove them from the new board by clicking on their profile pictures and selecting “Remove from Board”.
  • Update integrations: If you had any integrations or automations set up for the old board, such as Butler or Power-Ups, make sure to update them to work with the new board.

Conclusion

Moving Trello boards can be a seamless process if you follow these steps. Remember to always export the board as a backup before making any changes, create a new board in the desired location, and import the exported board into the new one. Don’t forget to clean up any remnants of the old board to maintain a clutter-free Trello workspace. Happy board moving!
