Vector Linux 7.0 Light released
Vector Linux 7.0 Light is completed and released! Thank you to all the developers, testers and contributors who made this possible.
The term "Light" is relative. This 4-in-1 version gives you the choice of several window managers, in progressively heavier configurations. These are layered on top of the VL 7.0 Standard base, so the expected libraries, toolkits, compilers and codecs remain available.
For those who want a starting point for their own customized desktop, there is the "Barebone" option. It is managed by the super-lightweight JWM, without much fluff. Netsurf, a small and speedy web browser, gives you access to the power of the Internet. Use the included build tools and package manager to download and install the programs of your choice. This configuration has been tested on a Pentium 3 with 128 MB of memory.
The next level up is "Light". If you have used VL6 Light, you will find it very familiar. IceWM and PCManFM-mod power the desktop without consuming a lot of resources. The window manager is "all manual", with extensive options for customization. Indicative of the lightweight applications included are Midori (web browser), Sylpheed (email), flburn (cdrom burning) and wicd (network management). Dynamic mounting of removable drives is accomplished using udev (no hal). This setup works well with 256 MB of RAM.
For more powerful computers, the "Medium" option is a good choice. This gives you the Openbox window manager, fbpanel with a dynamic menu, and PCManFM to handle the desktop and file management. Full size applications include Firefox 11, Abiword and Gnumeric. Samba is installed for those who need to share files with Windows computers. We recommend a 1 GHz or better CPU and 512 MB of RAM for this option.
At the high end you get the full LXDE software suite, on top of everything in "Medium". This desktop environment keeps up with the times, while maintaining a user interface that many of us have grown accustomed to over the years.
Known issues and recommendations: The text installer is showing its age. You will see some warning messages flash by as you install. These are safe to ignore. It may appear to stall at 99%, that last percent includes configuration scripts and takes a while. Watch the hdd light for activity.
The auto-configuration of X is very good. Try running without an xorg.conf. If you need a manual setup on a laptop, you may get better results with the standard mouse driver, rather than choosing "enable touchpad".

VL6.0 KDE-Classic-Live Released
The Vector Linux team is happy to announce the release of VL6.0 KDE-Classic-Live.
KDE 3 veterans will appreciate that this release retains the solid KDE 3.5.10. There are many updates compared to the original, install only release. The Live-installer has been improved. Live mode makes it simple to test compatibility with your hardware before committing to a permanent installation.
KDE-Classic is configured with full web and multimedia capabilities out of the box. Firefox has all the plugins that Vector Linux users are used to; Flash 10, Mplayer and Java. Further functionality from VLC and Xine ensures that you will be able to handle all common audio and video formats. Amarok is ready for your music collection. The King of CD/DVD burning, K3b, is also included.
When installed to your hard drive, the system is easily expanded using Gslapt. You will be able to download and install a large number of additional programs available from our package repository.
Get your copy here:
- VL6.0-KDE-Classic-Live.iso
- Md5: eb3dc540d08a263c637e785092f679a9
Release notes:
The most accurate and flexible method for configuring video is "Probe for video", which will use vxconf to walk you through the process.
Changes made in the live environment transfer to installed system. You can delete the "vl" user account and create a new one during installation.
The Live CD uses blank passwords. Make sure to assign passwords during hard drive installation. Otherwise, certain programs like cups and samba may experience problems.
Due to space constraints, large programs like OpenOffice are not included on the disc. Install via gslapt.
Before installing vlnvidia or vlati, download and install the kernel sources.Unlike VL Light Live, the Live-tools will not be available after install. Those who want to re-master their own version will need to install that package afterwards.
The usual Vector Linux tools are included to help you manage your system. Look for "VASMCC" on the menu under "System", or run "vasm" in a terminal.
Vector Linux 6.0 Kde Classic
The VectorLinux crew is proud to announce the final release of VL6.0-KDE-CLASSIC. This release is not about bleeding edge technology. On the other hand, it is not about nostalgia either. KDE 3.5.10 gets the job done. It is a mature and solid product with a large user base. Many of us are comfortable with it, and are not yet ready to leave it behind. We thought it only right to make a robust system with KDE 3.5.10 at the helm.
The classic text installer will quickly have you up and running with the expected KDE tools. The Koffice suite is fast and suitable for everyday word processing, spreadsheets and presentations. Multimedia capabilities have been enhanced with the inclusion of VLC Media Player, Xine and the Mplayer application and plugin. For Internet usage, Firefox is the default browser. The Pidgin multi-protocol Instant Messenger is an optional install. Web cameras are supported. Wireless networking is easily configured using Wicd. Dial-up is handled by the Chestnut dialer. The KDE game collection provides entertainment for the young and the young at heart.
After installation, your system is easily managed and extended using the VASM Control Center and the Gslapt Package Manager.

Light is aimed at users with some Linux experience. It is biased towards technical simplicity and high performance. Based on VL6.0 Standard, the most resource hungry applications have been removed or replaced with lighter alternatives. Running services are kept to a minimum.
Default user interface is IceWM with Pcmanfm as your file and desktop manager. Alternate window manager is JWM. Opera provides a fast and standards-compliant web browser with Flashplayer 10 and Mplayer plugins, as well as e-mail and bittorrent clients. Firefox is also available. For local multimedia playback you will find Xmms, Gmplayer and Xine. Record audio with flrec. Vburn takes care of basic CD burning tasks. The Wicd network manager makes it easy to manage wireless connections. Pidgin Instant Messenger works with IRC, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Google talk and several other services. The ultra-light Siag Office provides basic word processing and spreadsheet functionality. Graphics are handled by Gqview, Xpdf and Mtpaint. Additional programs include Xarchiver, Leafpad, Ripperx, Xchat, Gftp, Dillo, HV3 and the Fox applications. You can choose between the GDM or KDM login managers. GDM has the advantage of offering easy localization for non-English users. Default auto-mounter for removable devices is vl-hot.
An optional "dev" package makes it a complete Linux workstation which includes a full development environment for programming and compiling code. Full kernel sources are also included. Alongside a huge array of typical Linux command line utilities and software you get scripting languages, man pages, documentation and a complete console based on bash. Multiple toolkits are installed, supporting a wide variety of applications. The system can be further expanded using the package manager or your own packages.
It is recommended that your system meets these requirements: Pentium 200 or better compatible processor (i586 and up). 64 MB of memory - but 128 MB will greatly improve performance. Hard disk space: 2 GB for an install with X-window system, Internet and multimedia applications. 3 GB for "everything". Absolute minimum is 1.1 GB.
The 617 MB CD Image is created using low compression, which greatly speeds up the installation on slower machines. The disc contains boot floppy images for computers that are unable to boot from a CDROM drive.
After you try VectorLinux Light, please come back and post your feedback at the VL Forum.
VectorLinux Light 6.0 Beta 3
It's testing time again. Light Beta 3 is here:

To create a version suitable for older/slower computers, the Vector team started with VL6.0 Standard Gold and replaced XFCE/LXDE with IceWM/JWM. The most resource hungry applications were removed, and where feasible, replaced with lighter alternatives. Running services are kept to a minimum. ISO image file has been re-done with less compression that can be handled by lower spec machines. Download is 615 MB and a full install consumes 2.6 GB of hard drive space.
Light is biased towards simplicity and performance, but you get a complete and capable system. It can easily be expanded using the gslapt package manager or by compiling your own applications. Package selection includes Pcmanfm 0.5 as your file and desktop manager. Opera provides a fast and standards compliant web browser with Flashplayer 10 and Mplayer plugins, as well as e-mail and bittorrent clients. Firefox is also available. For local multimedia playback you will find Xmms, Gmplayer and Xine.

VectorLinux 6.0 RC4 has been released
The VectorLinux team has released the fourth and we hope final release candidate of VectorLinux 6.0. There were more issues then we anticipated and some major upgrades to key programs that we feel requires another RC before we can feel comfortable with a final release. With any luck there should be no more RC releases.
This release builds on the previous release candidate with a all new 2.6.27.12 kernel and the new alsa sound release 1.0.19 that insures functionality for many of the new netbooks and fixes a ton of problems with the intel-hda sound module. The gui installer has been further tweaked with more bug fixes that address some smaller problems. More hardware related issues that were reported in the last release have been fixed. There have been security related updates to critical packages such as openssl, ntfs-3g and a few others. We have included 4 versions of nvidia drivers that should cover all generations of video chipsets. There were some minor tweaks to the graphics and some new packages were added. Internationalization and localization have been improved with additional fonts and bug fixes. We hope everyone will give this a test drive and report any problems/bugs back to our forum development area.
Thank You, Vector and the "A Team"

VectorLinux 6.0 RC1 has been released
The VectorLinux development team is proud to announce the first release candidate of VectorLinux 6.0. This release is the result of the excellent bug reporting feedback from members of our community and beyond. We have tried to squash most of the bugs reported and add some additional polish to the default theme and the gui installer. The gui installer has gone through many rewrites since the beta2 release. We think you will find many improvements both in design and execution. We are still looking for feedback as the installer progresses towards our final release. We have updated several software packages and have added the all new slapt-get notifier which automatically notifies the user via a tray icon that software updates are available. The browser plugins have been updated to the latest flash 10 and mplayerplug-in. Firefox, Opera, Seamonkey, Gftp, Pidgin and our own Vl-hot have all been updated since the beta2 release. We are another step closer to final!
The big news is Vector has a new gui installer for the first time! This was built from the ground up and not a rehash of any of the other gui installers used by other distro's. This release features the 2.6.27.7 kernel with the latest wireless drivers and firmware updates. The default Window manager is Xfce4 with LXDE as alternate. We have the latest Firefox, Opera and Seamonkey with all the media codecs and flash so all the web and personal media content is available out of the box. For light office work you will find Abiword and Gnumeric. For heavy duty work, OpenOffice is available as a download from our ever expanding repo. We have added jpilot for those of you with handhelds. The included multimedia applications are the latest Mplayer, Xine, K3b and vlc. We have some of the all time favorite games including Penguin command, Pysol and Xgalaga and many more available in our repo. The latest stable Perl 5.10 has also been added. We hope you enjoy our latest labor of love. Please let us know of any bugs you encounter or just general feedback by posting in our web forum.

The VectorLinux team is proud to announce the release of VectorLinux 5.8 GOLD LIVE CD and the first SOHO-5.8 alpha live CD and DVD. This is the final release for 5.8 standard GOLD live. The hard drive installer that has been problematic is fixed and should work well. The SOHO 5.8 alpha live comes in either CD or DVD versions. The DVD version includes all that is in the SOHO-5.8 install release plus 62 additional language packs for KDE. The CD version has lost some funtionality due to size constraints. The development tool chain and OpenOffice (replaced by Koffice) were removed. However, for demo purposes the CD live version of SOHO-5.8 should work well.
These live CD's demo all that is making the 5.8 Vector release famous like browser plugins, seamonkey firefox and opera, the newest xfce4 desktop, The Gimp and Xara LX, Abiword and Gnumeric, vasm and vl-hot, wireless drivers and configuration tools, support for read and write to ntfs via fuse and ntfs-3g, and lots of fun and games.
